The 48 Chair 1948
The 48 Chair is easily recognizable because of Finn Juhl's characteristic and sculptural shapes and delicate details. The chair embraces the seated person while the rounded surfaces are shaped to fit the gravity of the resting body and its proportions. The organically shaped seat and backrest, upholstered in fabric or leather, are raised from the carrying frame in an almost demonstrative manner. Visually this lifts the seated person, making it appear as if the law of gravity has been defeated. The Susann chair is not only well-designed, but the shape and materials look ridiculously comfortable, which is often not the case.
The Kaufmann Table 1945
The Kaufmann Table was originally designed for Finn Juhl's own home, just like many other of his iconic designs. The table is in a league of its own with an unusually refined edge profile that gives the illusion that the tabletop is floating above the frame.
Finn Juhl deliberately worked with a mix of wooden materials. A dark tabletop in walnut and a lighter frame in oak very clearly separates the carried and the carrying elements. The table's many design details have both a practical and visual function.
